Every once in a while a craving for something sweet comes along that just cannot be contained. Most of the time, a piece of chocolate can hold me over, but now and then I am in need of a treat that’s a little bit sweeter.
There are plenty of bakeries in the area, but I am partial to Sprinkleista on Jay Street in Schenectady. Conveniently located, perhaps dangerously close to my office, Sprinkleista is a small little bakery with a fresh selection of cookies, cupcakes, and cheesecake to name a few.
Creative cakes made to order, often featured on their Instagram, are stunning. But, it’s the cupcakes that are the star of the show. Flavors include classics like chocolate peanut butter and cookies & cream, as well as seasonal offerings like pumpkin, and chocolate stout made with beer from local brewery, Great Flats. Next time you’re looking to support a local business, or for a quick afternoon sugar high, consider Sprinkleista.
In the event that you’re looking for something a little different, consider waffle Wednesday’s at Wolff’s Biergarten. While there is an extensive german food menu available at the Biergarten, you should treat yourself to a sweet belgian waffle. Go on Wednesday’s when waffles are available for just $1!
Newly opened on State Street in Schenectady is the Cocobar. Owned and operated by the Mallozzi Family, the minds behind another Schenectady bakery, Villa Italia, Cocobar is a one stop shop for all things chocolate. Whether you are in the mood for chocolate covered almonds or a coconut macaroon, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Going south there are some great dessert options too, like Cookie DO NYC where you can order cookie dough in a dish and eat it like ice cream. But if it’s real ice cream you’re in the mood for head to The Good Batch in Brooklyn for ice cream sandwiches.
Of course I’ve had plenty of sweet treats from out of state too. Some of my favorites include freak frappes from Boston Burger Company. These shakes come in many flavors and are covered in everything from toasted marshmallows to literal pieces of cake. While we’re on the subject of Boston, I would be remiss to leave out the tourist favorite, Mike’s Pastry where I most recently indulged in a giant and delicious mint chip cannoli.
